We're a global team of over 400 people, working together to push the boundaries of open-source technology and multi-cloud solutions. Our vision is to help developers, builders, and creators bring their ideas to life with speed and simplicity, by providing a cloud data platform that makes open-source databases, search, streaming, and application infrastructure easily accessible to everyone.
About the team
The Monetization Platform team owns how Aiven meters, prices, bills and gets paid for everything it sells.
We are building the monetization platform with a long-term roadmap: metering, pricing and packaging, credits, invoicing, payments and revenue data as self-serve capabilities with clear APIs and clear ownership. Our ambition is a monetization platform that serves internal and external customers, humans and agents alike.
We are part of Aiven's Platform, alongside the Access & Identity and Console & IaC teams, so monetization, identity and the developer surface are designed together.
The role
We are hiring an AI-native backend engineer to help turn our billing systems into Aiven's Monetization Platform. We are open to a mid-level or a senior engineer. What matters most is that you already build software with AI as a core part of how you work, and that you want to own a platform, not just ship tickets.
What you'll do
- Build it with your team: design and implement the metering, pricing, invoicing and payment services in Python that every Aiven product and team depends on.
- Make it self-serve: expose monetization through well-designed APIs and SDKs so product teams, customers and their agents can price, meter and read usage without opening a ticket.
- Own correctness at scale: billing has few happy paths. You treat reconciliation, idempotency, retries, audit trails and month-end runs as the real work and keep every invoice right.
- Work AI-first: use frontier models and agentic coding tools as your default workflow, and help build the harnesses, evals and shared context that make AI-assisted work reliable for the whole team.
- Partner across the company: work with Finance, GTM, Support and the product domains to turn pricing and packaging decisions into working software.
- Operate what you build: release, monitor and run your services in production with clear runbooks, SLOs and alerting that only fires when it matters.
What we're looking for
Must-have
- AI-native engineer: you already apply AI across your SDLC, not just autocomplete. You can show how you use agentic tools for design, coding, testing and debugging, how you validate the output, and what you have built to make it repeatable (prompts, skills, harnesses, evals, CI checks).
- Python: excellent, production-grade Python. You write clear, well-tested, maintainable services and care about types, idempotency and error handling.
- Backend fundamentals: relational databases and schema design (we run on PostgreSQL), REST/API design, asynchronous and event-driven processing, and strong automated testing habits.
- Ownership: examples of designing and shipping technical deliverables end to end in a team, including running them in production.
- Product and platform mindset: you ask "why", think about the internal and external users of what you build, and prefer a self-serve capability over a one-off fix.
- Communication: fluent English, written and verbal, with engineers and with Finance, GTM or Support alike.
Nice to have
- Billing, payments, metering, subscriptions or usage-based pricing systems; integrations with payment providers such as Stripe, or ERP/finance systems such as NetSuite.
- Cloud infrastructure: one or more hyperscaler APIs (AWS, GCP, Azure), containers and orchestration, Infrastructure as Code.
- Building agent tooling or LLM-backed features in production.
- Data pipelines and workflow orchestration (task queues, Temporal/Dagster-style systems) and SQL-heavy reporting.
- Observability practice: metrics, tracing, SLOs and alert hygiene.
- Experience in a compliance- or audit-sensitive environment (revenue recognition, SOX-style controls).
